Roadtrippers Autopilot™  is a new AI-powered trip planning tool available for Premium members! Autopilot will plan your next adventure with our curated AI technology based on real traveler experiences. You can find answers to some common questions below.

How do I use Autopilot?

When you start planning a new trip from the Roadtrippers website or mobile app, select the "Plan it for me" option. You'll be asked to answer the following questions and then Autopilot will generate a trip for you!

  • Where are you adventuring? Tell us where you're starting from, where you're going to, and whether you want a round trip or one-way.
  • When are you traveling? Set the dates for when you're traveling. For long trips, we'll suggest where and when to stay overnight.
  • What are you driving? Select a vehicle that's already saved to your profile or add a new one. We'll use that information to estimate your fuel price and customize the route.
  • Who will be traveling? Let us know who's traveling and we'll look for places for the whole crew.
  • Where do you want to stay? Choose your preferred type of accommodation and set a price range.
  • Where do you want to eat? Choose your type of place and set a price range.
  • What kind of activities do you want to do? Choose your preferred type of activity and set a price range.

If you're open to anything, the "most popular" option for where to stay, places to eat, and things to do may be a good option for you!

Remember to review and confirm details about your trip such as visiting hours, booking availability, pet restrictions, and road closures before you hit the road.

Can Autopilot make multiple recommendations?

Yep! After your trip is generated, look for the "Not sure about this trip?" banner at the top of your itinerary and select "Back to Autopilot" to quickly go back and generate another trip with the same or new preferences.

Note that this banner will go away after you make any changes to the trip, such as adding or removing waypoints, and then you'll need to start a new trip to launch Autopilot again.

Can I edit the trip after using Autopilot?

Of course! We hope the trip generated by Autopilot gives you some great recommendations and helps jump-start your planning, and you can customize the trip to make it your dream itinerary.

You can browse categories for more things to do or places to visit along your route, add and remove waypoints, edit dates, add details to waypoints, and more.

Watch the video below for some tips to help customize your trip, and visit the links below for more detailed instructions.

Can I plan a trip myself without using Autopilot?

You bet! If you want total control of your trip itinerary from start to finish, select "I want to plan it myself" when you're starting a new trip and then you can manually create your trip as usual.

Why did I get an error when I submitted my Autopilot trip?

The most common reason for an error is that we cannot find a driveable route to your destination.

For example, if you're starting a trip in California and set your destination as Hawaii, Autopilot won't be able to plan a trip for you. Double-check your starting point and destination to confirm you'd expect a driveable route to be found.

If the error persists, please click here to contact us so that we can look into the issue further. To help us help you, please provide the details you entered into Autopilot so that we can try to reproduce the issue.

What kind of trips can I plan with Autopilot?

Autopilot is best for planning road trips within the United States and Canada. Your destination could be a couple weeks in Vancouver, BC, a day trip to the Grand Canyon, a weekend in Boston, MA, or anywhere in between!

Autopilot is focused on road trips, it doesn't incorporate flights or other modes of transportation. If you're flying somewhere before starting the road travel portion of your trip, you should set the location you're flying to as the starting point for your Autopilot trip.

How can I share feedback about Autopilot?

If you give Autopilot a try, we'd love to hear from you! We're interested in the good and the bad - so let us know what you liked, if you ran into any issues, or share suggestions for what would improve the experience.  You can contact us by clicking here.
