Preview and Navigate with Avoidances and RV Safe Preferences Applied

This article explains how to set routing options, preview your trip route with those options applied, and navigate with them active. It also covers what route warnings mean when they appear.

Avoidances (highways, boat ferries, toll roads, and dirt roads) are available to Roadtrippers Pro and Premium members. RV-safe routing (vehicle height, weight, and propane) is available to Roadtrippers Premium members only.

Routing Options

Avoidances

Avoidances are applied per trip — they're not automatically applied across all of your trips.

You can choose to avoid any combination of the following:

  • Highways
  • Boat Ferries
  • Toll Roads
  • Dirt Roads

RV-Friendly Routing

If you have a Roadtrippers Premium membership, you can enter your RV's height and weight and we'll work to find a safe route for your trip. RV-safe routing accounts for low overhead clearances, weight restrictions, and propane restrictions.

If you've saved an RV as your primary vehicle on your profile, your RV routing preferences will automatically be applied to new trips you create. It's always a good idea to verify these settings before you hit the road.

US Routes Only

RV-safe routing is only available for routes within the United States. RV settings will not apply to any portions of your route that extend outside U.S. boundaries.

Propane On Board

Enabling Propane On Board will attempt to route your trip around areas in the United States with strict propane restrictions. These restrictions typically apply regardless of propane volume or whether your valve is shut off.

In some cases, propane-restricted areas cannot be avoided entirely. If that happens, you'll see a warning letting you know.

In all cases, we recommend reviewing road information before you depart, as we do not independently verify routing data. Always use your own judgment and follow local laws and traffic codes.

Preview Your Route with Routing Options

Expand the RV-Friendly routing section to enter your vehicle's height (feet and inches) and weight (pounds). Check the 'Propane on board' box if applicable to avoid propane-restricted areas. Click Apply when done.

Navigate with Routing Options

You can navigate to a waypoint on your trip, or to a brand-new destination, with avoidances and RV-friendly options active — in the Roadtrippers app for iOS or Android.

Heads up: Roadtrippers doesn't yet support continuous multi-stop navigation. You'll navigate stop by stop. If you added VIA waypoints to customize your route, make sure to navigate to each one so your route follows the roads you intended.

iOS App Android App

There are two ways to navigate using routing options in the Roadtrippers iOS app. You can start a navigation session to a new location or you can navigate between waypoints on a trip you've planned. Directions for both follow below.

To a new destination

If you know where you are going and want to start navigating without adding that destination to a trip, you can start navigation right from the Explore screen on the app.

  1. From the Explore screen, tap Navigate.

Route Warnings

After you apply routing options, we'll update your route to reflect your preferences. If we can't find a route that fully avoids your selected restrictions, you'll see a warning and the affected segments will be marked on your itinerary.
